Title:Computational approaches to solving the Hodgkin-Huxley equations from neuroscience

The Hodgkin-Huxley equations describe the behavior of the giant squid neuron. For a given input current, they can predict the neuron cell voltage and its spiking behavior. These are four very complicated nonlinear, coupled ODE's which govern the behavior of a single neuron. The human brain has roughly 100 billion neurons (and 10**15 synapses) and each one is coupled to more than 1000 other neurons. I will discuss several algorithms for solving these equations including explicit Euler, implicit Euler, and Exponential Euler. I will also discuss numerical stability and accuracy issues, and CPU time requirements. Simpler neuron models will also be mentioned (e.g. LIF). Understanding and solving these equations could be beneficial to understanding biological intelligent systems as well as intelligent machines and robots.
