| Title: | Patterns of curves in the plane and piecewise translations |
| Seminar: | MASS Colloquium |
| Speaker: | Pat Hooper, CUNY |
| Abstract: |
| A curve in the plane is called simple if it has no self intersections. In this talk we will consider various methods of constructing random simple curves in the plane. These curves can either close up or be unbounded. We consider the question "What is the probability that a random curve closes up?" This question shows up in Percolation theory and also in the study of piecewise translations, which we empasize. |
