|Many problems in science and engineering require the solution of a parametrized differential equation for many values of the parameter. Examples can be found in optimization, design, control etc. Brute force solution is often not practical, yet simple models may not be sufficiently accurate.
One way of dealing with this is to develop a model of reduced complexity that enable one to recoved accurate results at reduced computation cost.
We shall discuss some of the basic assumptions and techniques underlying such an approach, highlighting both strenghts and shortcomings for linear and nonlinar problems.|
