|Suppose that a compact Lie group G acts on a symplectic manifold. If the manifold is compact, and if an integrality condition is satisfied, then it may be "quantized" so as to obtain a finite-dimensional representation of G. Guillemin and Sternberg studied this construction in detail and proposed geometric formulas for the multiplicities of the irreducible representations of G contained in the quantization. It is also of interest to consider noncompact manifolds, particularly in connection with representation theory, and the problem of understanding this case has been successfully attacked using analytic techniques by Ma and Zhang, Paradan, and others. I shall outline this work and its applications, and examine the prospects for a geometric attack on the same problem.|
