W. G. Pritchard Lab Seminar - 103 Osmond Laboratory **Wednesday January 30th, 2002** Spectral Problems of Elasticity in Periodic Structures Alexander B. Movchan Department of Mathematical Sciences University of Liverpool Abstract: This lecture presents an analytical approach to the analysis of elastic waves propagating through infinite arrays of obstacles (inclusions or voids) in an elastic matrix. The solution is represented via rapidly convergent multi-pole expansions. Analysis of dispersion equations for different types of structures enables one to construct dispersion diagrams and analyse stop bands for waves of certain frequencies and polarisations. The asymptotic approach has been developed to establish a correspondence between the continuum and lattice structures that can be used as filters and polarisers of elastic waves.
