W. G. Pritchard Lab Seminar - 109 Boucke Building **November 14, 2001** Onset of meniscii. Christophe Clanet IRPHE-CNRS Universite' d'Aix-Marseille, FRANCE Abstract: In ancient Greek, `m\^en\^e' designated the moon. It is now the root of the word `meniscus' which stands for a crescent of the moon, and is associated with the wetting of a liquid on a solid: When a vertical solid is brought in contact with the surface of a wetting liquid, a meniscus starts rising along the solid until it reaches its steady state. The final state is first described through an old but forgotten analogy between pendulum, solid rods, and meniscii. We also study the dynamical phenomenon of the rise.
