The Mathematics Department has 53 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 31 instructors and lecturers (including teaching visitors), and 17 postdocs (including Chowla Assistant Professors and Research Associates), 98 supported and 2 visiting graduate students, 281 Mathematics BS, 4 Mathematics BA undergraduate students and 18 BS undergraduate students with concurrent majors. Among the faculty there are a member of the National Academy of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the Royal Society, a member of the Royal Society of Canada, a member of the Romanian Academy of Sciences and a member of the African Academy of Sciences. Eleven have distinguished and endowed chairs. The Department is housed in the newly renovated McAllister Building on the University Park Campus, and it is one of the few in the nation with a physical laboratory where research and educational laboratory experiments are conducted. According to the latest National Research Council (NRC) ranking done in 2010, the mathematics department is somewhere in between the top 5 to 16 in quality in both the S and R measurements in the nation.
